Andy Falkous is something of a personal hero, and if he ever decides to give up on music, I just hope an institution of higher learning allows him an emeritus professorship based on the philosophical principles set forth by Mclusky’s Do Dallas. Our children deserve it.

I would attend that university

To buy a story from a prostitute is chequebook journalism at its worst…Who is going to take this seriously when they pay a prostitute money? It has absolutely no credibility.

Craig Thompson MP, alleged to have paid prostitutes quite a bit of money

I think Nikki likes The New Girl because it’s kind of like a glamorous version of that time she lived with six Irish tradesmen in a gross apartment in Melbourne.

Not rich

I have a love-hate relationship with Federal Budget time.  I’m a political nerd and I usually enjoy the theatre of it all.  But man do I hate the annual “we’re not rich” parade every time the government gives something to one group of people and not another.

People on “average” wages (of more than twice the actual average) are always trotted out by the newspapers to complain how hard it is to afford to keep their kids in private school, maintain their private health insurance and pay off their $700,000 mortgage.

Well of course it’s hard - no income is infinite.  I find that after I’ve paid for my 30-foot ocean-going yacht, there’s not a whole lot left for caviar.  Editors at the Daily Telegraph and Channel Nine, I am home all week if you would like to interview me.

This year, it’s all about “an ugly class war” pitted against the hard-working residents of my neighbourhood - the North Shore.  The “war” seems to consist of a couple of snarky comments by our Prime Minister and people earning high salaries not getting small cash payments that they don’t really need.  War is truly hell.

No one is actually suggesting that all North Shore residents are rich and/or undeserving.  Hence the fact that there are no postcode restrictions on welfare.  What is (quite accurately) being suggested is that if you live this side of The Bridge, you’re probably doing better than most and the decision to live in a high-cost area is one you have made.  And if things are so tough that an $800 cheque from the government is a matter of life and death, then there are plenty of cheaper places you could live.

Episode 318: Course Listing Unavailable   “what follows is some general purpose footage that he can use”

Does anyone else think Hologram Tupac left green screen footage of himself to Dre for just this kind of scenario?

I haven’t seen this view of Honolulu. This is only downtown, but I’m used to shots of the city that includes the forest of condominiums spread along Waikiki Beach. Without those, Honolulu looks much more like the relatively small city it really is.

We just got back from our trip to Mexico and Hawaii - my first time to either place.  I was surprised by how much Honolulu was like a slightly run-down Asian city - Kuala Lumpur maybe.  Not a bad thing, just surprising.

At the Sapporo

Last night we visited the Sapporo restaurant in Crows Nest, somewhere we’d walked past many times but never entered.  It’s an interesting kind place - almost the exact midpoint between a traditional Japanese izakaya and a North Shore sports bar.  The sake and shochu menu was extensive, and the sushi was authentic enough, but all the waitresses wore rugby jerseys and the big screen was showing rugby union.  It’s a strange fusion, but it seems to satisfy that common North Shore situation of hankering for wagyu teriyaki but not being willing to miss the Waratahs game.

Today I asked Nikki, “Why is there so much Soviet-style architecture on the North Shore?  What were we fighting the Cold War for anyway?”
Crows Nest: Where the Communists are still winning.
